If your child has a Special Educational Need or Disability (SEND), you already know that the mainstream school system can be an incredibly frustrating environment.
Modern classrooms are built on standardisation. With thirty children in a room, teachers are forced to deliver a "one-size-fits-all" curriculum. For students with dyslexia, ADHD, autism, or working memory issues, this environment can quickly lead to cognitive overload, crushing anxiety, and a deep-seated belief that they are simply "bad at school".
When parents look for help, they often turn to standard private tuition. But simply repeating the same classroom textbook, just slightly slower and slightly louder, does not work for a neurodivergent mind.
Specialist SEND tutoring is not about teaching the curriculum; it is about teaching the child.

After 5 years in the classroom and through my research as an Oxford MSc candidate, I have learned that unlocking a student's potential requires dismantling the traditional "drill and kill" approach. You cannot memorise your way out of a learning difference. Instead, my sessions are built on evidence-based pedagogical strategies designed specifically to support how the neurodivergent brain processes information.
First, we focus on managing cognitive load. Children with ADHD or processing delays often have limited working memory. I design sessions that ruthlessly strip away unnecessary clutter. We break complex tasks down into highly manageable chunks, ensuring the brain has the capacity to actually encode new information rather than just panicking.
We also incorporate dual coding. Presenting information both visually and verbally gives the brain two pathways to store knowledge. However, there is a fine line between dual coding and sensory overload. I use highly specific, structured visual frameworks that support text without overwhelming the student.
Furthermore, we prioritise low-stakes assessment. For many SEND students, the sheer anxiety of being tested triggers a stress response that completely blocks learning. I utilise continuous, invisible Assessment for Learning (AfL). We check understanding through collaborative dialogue and low-stakes tasks, removing the fear of failure and replacing it with genuine curiosity.
Finally, the ultimate goal is building metacognition. A child should not have to rely on me forever, so we spend time discussing exactly how they learn best. By helping them understand their own brain through Assessment as Learning, we equip them with the self-regulation tools they need to survive and thrive independently in the mainstream classroom.

Academic progress is impossible without emotional security. The most important metric in my first few sessions is not how many answers a student gets right, but whether their shoulders drop and they finally feel safe enough to say, "I don't understand."
If your child is feeling lost in the noise of the mainstream system, they do not need to try harder. They just need a different approach. Whether you are based here on the Fylde Coast or looking for targeted online support, let's build a learning environment where your child can actually thrive.

This is exactly why I am branching out of the mainstream classroom and building Cooper Freelance Tutoring.
With 5 years of experience in both state schools in diverse areas and selective independent schools at the chalkface and as an Oxford MSc Learning and Teaching candidate, I don't just 'tutor', I diagnose. Whether your child is aiming for top grades or simply needs to rediscover their confidence after falling behind, true learning requires a bespoke approach. I specialise in translating complex academic concepts into accessible, engaging lessons, with a deep understanding of SEND requirements and modern Assessment for Learning strategies.
We don't just survive the exams; we build confident, independent learners who actually understand the mechanics of the subject.
If you are based in West Lancashire or are looking for high-quality online tuition, let's bring your child's education out of the shadows.
